I don’t really know how the Butterfly Beach came to be called so. My rationale: the two hills guarding it on either side might represent the wings of a butterfly.

A lot has been said about this place. That one needs to trek to reach here, that water here is crystal clear and that not many people prefer to go here, these are the most common descriptions of the place. Curious, I decided to see what all the noise was about. The place definitely lives up to the buildup.

How to reach

Situated in the southern part of the state of Goa, the beach is connected by road from the highway. However, for about 3 kms before the destination, the road is rocky and at a few places, treacherous. It is advisable to take a two-wheeler as at certain point the road becomes too narrow. Do note that you will be required to park your vehicle at least 2 kms before the beach and cover the rest of the distance by foot.

What to do there

Unlike other popular beaches which are filled with shacks and have been commercialized, Butterfly Beach doesn’t house any avenues for commercial activity. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that has contributed to its beauty. Once there, enjoy the scenic sands and marvel at the natural beauty surrounding it. A dip in clear water works wonders for a body that has been tired by the trek leading to them. If you’d like to gaze at the horizon and reflect into yourself, find a rock to climb and let the ocean work its soothing wonders.

Word of caution

While visiting, please keep in mind a few things:

1. The road leading to the parking is rocky and loose at places. Hence, avoid driving at high speeds

2. Avoid going during the monsoons as both the beach as well as the roads may cause navigation to be a tough exercise

3. The beach is steep. The water can be at knee level at one step and at chest level at the next step. Therefore, either wear a life jacket if venturing inside or go with someone who knows how to swim. In any case, avoid venturing deep into the water as there aren’t any lifeguards appointed for this stretch of the sea

4. As you go closer to the rocks you may encounter crabs residing there. Therefore, avoid disturbing them in their habitat

Advise to fellow travelers

I cannot emphasize on this point enough: PLEASE DO NOT LITTER. The sea is not a garbage bin. Sanitary workers may not reach there every day. This natural heaven is as much yours as it is mine and it is our duty to keep it clean. If you are bringing anything to eat/ drink, please keep the packaging with you and throw it in the dustbin when you see one.

Do pay this place a visit next time you are in Goa. And remember, it belongs to all of us. So, treat it with the respect it commands.
